VOICES

What respondents wrote

The last question was free text. From the answers, we picked ones that contain nothing that could identify a person or their employer, and show them exactly as written. They are not included in the aggregate data.

  • The deciding factor is price. I'll stop paying once the amount goes beyond what I find acceptable as a fair trade for the convenience. I subscribed to Microsoft 365 personally until April and used the Copilot that came with it often, but Microsoft 365 itself became too expensive, so I canceled it along with Copilot. I use it at work now, but since I sometimes want to work from home, I'd like to get just MS Word and Copilot.

    60s, female, company employee, designer

  • Whether it is essential is the deciding factor. ChatGPT in particular I pay for because I need it for work, and since I have trained it quite a bit, even when I use other tools now and then, I am sometimes not satisfied with their answers and end up coming back. A more expensive plan would not change things dramatically, so I think I would keep using it even if the price went up somewhat from what I pay now. Or, if it became 2 or 3 times the price and not much different from the higher plan, I think I would switch to the higher plan. (This was not one of the options.)

    30s, female, self-employed/freelance, office work

  • If it got too expensive, I don't think I could pay no matter how much the features improved. Even ¥3,000 feels a bit high to me. Around ¥1,500 would be the most welcome, and I think it would bring in more users too. Even with a price increase, I'm not sure I'd end up using the features to their full potential.

    30s, female, self-employed/freelance, accounting

  • I only use the free plan and have no plans to move to a paid plan, so I haven't really thought about what I'd do if the price went up. If a tool became paid-only, I would give up on it and switch to another AI tool that still has a free plan. In short, whether it's free or paid is the deciding factor in whether I keep using a tool.

    60s, female, not currently working

  • If an AI tool raises its price, my deciding factor is whether it still delivers enough value for the new price. If it clearly saves time or lets me do things I couldn't do before, offering benefits beyond the cost, I'll keep using it. On the other hand, if the price increase is a heavy burden and I can replace it with a free tool or another service, I'll consider switching or stopping use. I especially weigh the balance between how often I actually use it and the monthly fee.

    30s, male, not currently working

  • The free plan is enough if I'm only using it for chatting or getting advice, but I pay for a paid plan because the number of free image generations is too limited. If a more advanced image or video generation service launched, I'd consider staying even with a price increase. But if the service stays the same, I think I'd quit.

    18–29, female, part-time worker, healthcare

METHODOLOGY

Methodology

We show everything: who we asked, how we asked and how we counted. The figures are produced by a program only. We do not let AI do any counting.

Conducted by
AInformation
Survey period
September 21, 2026–September 22, 2026 (Asia/Tokyo)
How responses came in
300 responses collected from 3:10 p.m. on September 21 to 5:02 p.m. on September 22.The peak was the 3 p.m. hour on September 21, with 47 responses.Collection closed once 300 responses were reached. It did not stay open until the scheduled closing date of October 5
Target respondents
Respondents to an open online call for participants who said they used an AI tool in the past 30 days
Survey method
Internet survey (web questionnaire) / Respondents recruited online (first-come, one response per person, limited to respondents with a good track record on past surveys)
Eligibility requirements
People who used an AI tool (such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, or Copilot) in the past 30 days
How people took part
Optional. There is no penalty for not answering. Answers come from people who signed up and answered on their own. This is not a randomly selected sample.
Collected and valid responses
Of the 300 responses collected, we excluded 3 responses from the tally and counted 297 responses as valid. The target was 300 responses.
Weighting
None (unweighted). Because respondents took part voluntarily, there is no basis for adjusting the results to represent Japan as a whole. We do not add margins of error (±X%) either.
Funding
Costs are covered by AInformation (Shunta Fujii). There is no sponsor.

How we tallied

  • The percentages use the number of people who answered that question as the denominator (non-responses are excluded from the denominator).
  • The results are not weighted. They come from a group of respondents who volunteered to take part and do not represent Japan as a whole.
  • Percentages shown are rounded to one decimal place. They may not add up to 100%.
  • For questions that allow multiple answers, the totals can add up to more than 100%.
  • In some multiple-answer questions, respondents selected “no use” together with a specific option. These counts are included in the checks for each question.
  • Results with a base of fewer than 30 people are for reference only, and results with fewer than 10 are not shown. This is an operating rule of this site, not a standard that guarantees statistical significance or anonymity.

What this survey cannot tell us

  • This survey asked people who responded to an open online call for participants. It does not represent all users of AI tools.
  • All answers are self-reported. We did not verify the plans respondents are subscribed to or the amounts they are paying.
  • What respondents said they would do if prices rose reflects their thinking at the time they answered. It does not mean they will actually act that way.
  • Tool-specific questions covered only two tools: the paid tool each respondent spends the most on and the free tool they use most often. We did not ask about every tool respondents use.
  • The collection period is separate from the second survey (September 26–October 2, 2026). However, because respondents were recruited using the same method, the same person may have answered both surveys. We do not combine or compare the figures from the two surveys.
  • We limited responses to one per person, but this cannot fully prevent the same person from answering again under a different registration.
  • The recruitment notice and the questions did not state that the aggregated results would be published. We decided to publish the results after collecting them, on the condition that no individual could be identified. Only the aggregated results for each question and free-text answers verified to not identify the writer are published.
  • We did not verify whether respondents are 18 or older and live in Japan. All we know is that they responded to an open online call for participants.
  • Answers come from people who signed up and answered on their own. Because this is not a random sample, the figures cannot be read as percentages for Japan as a whole.
  • Time spent and effects are self-reported by respondents. We did not measure them.

DATA

Published aggregate data

The files below contain the same figures as this page. The JSON and CSV files have the same content. We do not delete versions (v1, v2 and so on). That way, links from people who cited them keep working.

  • CSV Latest version (Japanese) https://ainformation.jp/data/research/ai-price-hike-2026-09/latest.csv (225KB)
  • JSON Latest version https://ainformation.jp/en/data/research/ai-price-hike-2026-09/latest.json (185KB)

FAQ

FAQ

Who runs these surveys?
AInformation (run by Shunta Fujii) plans the surveys and pays for them itself. No one commissions or sponsors them. We never create numbers to serve anyone's advertising.
How many people do you survey?
We set a target number of respondents for each survey before recruiting. Surveys published so far: 3, with 602 valid responses in total. Each survey's page shows how many responses we collected and how many we removed in quality checks. The base for each question is on the same page.
Can I use these figures as “X% of people in Japan”?
No. The survey asked people who answered an open online call for respondents, and the figures are shares of those respondents. The sample cannot be used to estimate figures for Japan as a whole, so we do not give a margin of error (±X%) either.
Do you use AI to tally the results?
All tallying is done by a program, not by AI. We use AI only for groundwork when reading open-ended answers and picking candidates for articles, and a person makes the final decision.
Can I use the data in my own materials or articles?
Yes. Please cite the AInformation survey name and URL as the source. The tallied figures are available as JSON and CSV. You may modify and redistribute them.
Could anyone tell which answers are mine?
No. We never publish anything in a form that could identify individuals. We do not publish the original open-ended answers either. Anything used in articles is chosen by a person after removing details that could identify an individual or a company.
Can I withdraw my answers?
Yes. Contact us through the contact form. If we have not tallied the results yet, we will remove your response. We keep responses for 2 years and delete them after that.
What will you survey next, and when?
Next, we will start a recurring survey that asks the same questions every time. Asking the same questions over time lets us show changes from the previous round in percentage points. We will post the topics and timing on this page when recruitment starts.
